Is a digital marketing solution applicable to managing the cat population in Singapore?

Technically, yes, it is possible. This is why my partner and I are working on a project, developing a digital marketing solution to cater to the cat community in Singapore. But the application might be tricky. Read on to find out why.

Why start this project?

It all started when I considered getting a cat a couple of years ago. Like everyone else, I thoroughly researched about cats before getting one. I chose to adopt one because many cats in Singapore need a home. So why buy when I can give one of these cats a home? Long story short, I ended up adopting Kenzo which is my first pet cat. Shortly after, I adopted two more cats, Bella and Snowball. I am a proud owner of three adorable kitties, and they are the inspiration behind this project.

Is the adoption process pleasant, or is information readily available? No, not at all. I find that the information readily available on the Cat Welfare Society (CWS) website is very helpful. But apart from that, I have to spend a lot of time gathering information and researching from multiple sources. To educate myself about cats, from general information, cat welfare, and its health and well-being.

After owning my cats until now, I still keep close to the cats community on social media. Mainly to learn from others and keep myself up-to-date with what’s happening within the cats’ community. It’s heartbreaking to see that almost every day, there are abandonment cases and sometimes accidents caused by neglectful and irresponsible owners. My love and passion for my cats are beyond words, and I know I want to do more to help the cats in Singapore. I advocate for cat adoption and responsible ownership and want to educate others on this topic.

Therefore, I volunteer with Project LUNI to help create digital marketing content about this topic to create awareness around the topics. Through my time volunteering with Project LUNI, I realised that so much work is involved in helping cats in Singapore. It includes trapping and neutering them, feeding , and fostering them to ensure they are socialised and in good health before rehoming them.

In the long run, will this digital solution help the cat community?

I honestly hope so. The need for continuous education for cat owners is crucial, especially the importance of sterilisation to manage the cat population within their household and responsibly to rehome their pet cats if they can no longer care for them so they won’t resort to abandonment. As I mentioned, the application might be tricky as technology is not a popular medium for independent rescuers or caretakers. This group of people is typically seniors and boomers, so the adoption rate might be low.

Nonetheless, I am very optimistic about this project. It will work with the help of volunteers from the younger population to drive this initiative forward and keep the cats in Singapore safe.
